DESCRIPTION

This hot rod Porsche started life as a 2.0L model and still wears its original color of Signal Orange. In 1995, an enthusiast from Washington acquired the car and installed a 911 flat 6 engine. He drove the car for about 10 years before parking it in the corner of his garage in 2005 due to personal reasons.

Early in 2016, he sold it to a longtime PCA/356 club member from Marietta, Georgia, who envisioned it as the perfect starting platform to build a fun weekend hot rod. For the next couple years, this owner worked on getting the mechanicals sorted/rebuilt. Modifications were many and included:

• Rebuild transmission (10/16)
• New synchros & bushings
• Diff bearing
• All new seals/gaskets
• Adjust ring/gear & pinion
• Full chassis alignment (4/17)
• Installed a rebuilt 2.0L flat 6 engine from a 1968 911S
• New PMO 40 carburetors (3/21)
• Porsche 911 steering rack
• Ansa quad tip exhaust system
• Patrick sport rear control trailing arms
• Koni adjustable shocks/struts with new rear springs
• Front and rear sway bars
• New carpet (interior and trunk) from Autos International
• New seat belts
• Custom Cocomats®
• Factory 914-6 multi gauge pack
• ATE master cylinder
• New brake rotors, pads, and lines
• New motor mounts
• PMB rebuilt brake calipers
• Momo steering wheel
• New shifter bushings
• Side shift console bushing
• Rear wheel bearings
• Aluminum space saver spare
• Factory 6×16 forged alloy Fuchs

In total, over $37k was invested in the project (not including the car). After 7 years and 8,900 miles of use, it was sold to a Southern California enthusiast in April of 2023. This enthusiastic owner proceeded to install a 2.4L flat six engine from a 911T built to S specification including cams, heads, upgraded squirters, Carrera oil-fed chain tensioners, and S oil pump. Other modifications included:

• Pertronix electronic ignition II
• Re-jet and tune the PMO carbs
• New battery
• Replace Targa top and door seals
• Repair driver seat and new breather gasket
• New rear view mirror and sun visors
• Prepare '72 911 T engine for install
• Leakdown / compression test:
1) 133/7% 2) 130/6% 3) 137/7% 4) 125/6% 5) 125/6% 6) 134/%
• Valve adjustment
• Seal oil coolers
• New valve cover gaskets
• Permatune ignition distributor
• Install rocker shaft and seals
• Dyno tuning by Ed Pink (152rwhp / 135lb. ft. tq. = 175hp & 155lb.ft.tq. at crank)
• New clutch cable
• Repair oil temp gauge

Between these previous two owners, nearly $60k in work was invested over the past 8 years/10k miles. When it arrived at The Stables, however, we immediately noticed a few additional items that needed attention, so we sent it to our good friends at EMC in Phoenix for further sorting. Carb jetting was found to be mismatched, so that has been corrected. The spark plugs were replaced and a fresh oil & filter change was performed. It now runs as it should and is highly entertaining to drive.

The original paint color of Signal Orange was likely resprayed over two decades ago and has held up well. There are a few chips and typical flaws from use, but nothing highly noticeable. There is no sign of body filler or major body repairs.

The glass is in good shape with no major chips, cracks, or scratches and retains the correct factory stampings. The vinyl covering the side sails looks fresh and the 16-inch Fuchs are factory wheels in what appears to be their original finish. The satin black centers are showing some light fading and the anodized lips were recently carefully cleaned and polished. The hand-painted crest center caps are original and in good condition as well.

We installed a new set of Dunlop Direzza tires which have only covered a few hundred miles so there's plenty left. The brake pads have approx. 75% remaining and all the exterior lights work.

The interior is in very nice condition with a mix of refurbished and original elements. The leatherette seats are correct and in excellent shape with no tears. The sliders and tilt mechanism work as designed on both seats. The carpet was replaced by the previous owner with the proper Haagarn S-carpet and are covered by correct-looking Cocoa mats. The vinyl panel over the firewall is in good shape and the seatbelts and the retractors operate smoothly. The removable Targa top headliner is in good shape and appears to have had the rubber seals replaced.

The dash is in excellent condition with no cracks or warping and the vents are all in good shape. An original center gauge console was sourced and installed. The VDO clock has been rebuilt with new components and keeps excellent time. All the other gauges work, including the 914-6 gauges installed where the radio ordinarily resides. There is no functional heater due to the headers and lack of heat exchangers. The windows roll up and down easily and the interior light works. A hidden Kenwood Bluetooth amp has been fitted under the dash and powers speakers mounted in their original locations.

It starts easily from cold and when this hot rod reaches temperature, the sound as it builds revs is music to the ears. It pulls hard over 4k and the 85% bump in horsepower over stock is clearly evident. This car clearly rewards the skilled driver! The upgraded brakes feel solid and match the car's added performance with no fading, pulling or sponginess. Handling is go kart-like, light and predictable and capable of excellent corning speeds while still being relatively compliant on rough surfaces.

This Porsche comes with several keys (5), vintage Porsche dealer key fob, Porsche crest key fob, 3-ring binder of records, recent dyno sheets, custom Cocomats, lug wrench, jack, and space saver spare.
