DESCRIPTION

A one-year only model built for the American market, Triumph's Michelotti-styled TR250 melds the best of the TR4 and TR6 into one special, sought-after package. This special TR250 came to us in September of '23 after being owned by the same family for nearly 40 years. A father & son acquired the car as a family project and their refurbishment commenced over the next 20-odd years, during which time the following modifications & upgrades were performed:

-Toyota 5-speed manual transmission
-Slotted and drilled front disc brakes
-Triple Weber carburetors
-Removable Surrey Top
-15" American Racing Silverstone wheels
-MSD electronic ignition
-Ansa quad exhaust
-Electric cooling fan

The car was stored in Northern California for a lengthy period prior to our acquisition & required significant recommissioning before driving. Upon arrival, there was an intermittent miss under load, so we changed out the Pertronix I to a Pertronix II, replaced the coil, plugs & wires, drained the fuel tank and replaced the fuel filter. The engine was reportedly rebuilt during the previous refurbishment with 13:1 compression ratio in addition to being fitted with a 305 degree-duration camshaft, ported cylinder head, exhaust headers, double roller timing chain, oil cooler, a spin-on oil filter, and a larger radiator.

After a bit of tinkering, the miss was now gone and the engine pulled strong at all revs, but the car was undriveable due to old, out-of-round tires. A new set of Vredestein HiTracs were ordered & installed and the car now drives & rides as it should. In the course of removing the wheels to dismount the old tires, we noticed play in the rear hub traced to a faulty wheel bearing. Two rebuilt rear hub assemblies were sourced and installed with no further issues.

The Surrey top was installed during the refurbishment, is removable and comes with a black, vinyl roof panel that can be substituted for the body-color aluminum panel. These tops are rare, giving the car a more finished look while providing additional creature comfort.

Overall, the paint shows well for a 40+ year old repaint with no major dings, dents or areas of rust. Brightwork is excellent w/no visible pitting. The wood dash is in excellent condition and all gauges function as designed. The engine fires easily from cold w/a few pumps of the throttle, and settles to a throaty idle. The combination of headers w/the Ansa exhaust make for a wonderful exhaust note that will have you searching out tunnels! Throttle response w/the triple Webers is instantaneous and acceleration is brisk.

The Toyota-sourced 5-speed gearbox has short, precise throws with well-spaced ratios allowing the car to run well in modern traffic. And the manually switched electric fan helps keep engine temps cool in every day conditions.

A classic and iconic British roadster, this tastefully updated TR250 is ready for immediate enjoyment and would attract attention at any Triumph or cars & coffee event, with upgrades making it perfectly suited for vintage rallies and tours.
