DESCRIPTION

Jaguar's E-type needs no introduction...since its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961, it's been the subject of voluminous books and magazine writings and was famously called "the most beautiful car ever made" by one Mr. E. Ferrari.

This particular E-type received a comprehensive restoration in the early 2000s that included disassembly to a bare shell with a repaint in its original black using PPG base and clear coat. Well known Jaguar specialist Martin Johnson addressed the mechanics by rebuilding the original 3.8 liter six installing new pistons, bearings, oil pump, timing chains, valves etc. New wheels and a stainless exhaust were also reportedly fitted at this time.

The car subsequently passed through several owners before noted restorer & racer Bruce Canepa offered it for sale in 2013. Jaguar specialists Classic Showcase then sold it to its next caretaker, Stephane Connery, Sean's son...yes, THAT Sean Connery. In December of 2015, Mr. Connery sold to a collector in Florida from whom we acquired it in April of '23. While in Florida, Wilwood front calipers were fitted along with a 5-speed gearbox and a hidden, bespoke audio system w/a plug in iPhone interface & upgraded speakers. The odometer now indicates 58k miles which are believed to be original.

Upon arrival at our shop, we found the 3.8-liter XK engine to be a bit noisier than normal so we removed the head, had the cams polished and replaced the guides, seals, valves & springs. The head was also resurfaced to ensure complete sealing to the block. The SUs were sent out to be cleaned & rebuilt and we installed new fuel lines from the tank to the carbs with new hardware and clamps. The three carbs have been properly tuned & synched and the engine fires immediately from cold.

The body is largely rust-free with no evidence of any major damage. Both doors close with a secure "thud" and shut lines are consistent. The paint shows well with some bubbles and chips on the bonnet. The canvas top folds and latches properly, and the rear window is clear and rip-free. The biscuit interior shows well with customary wear on the driver's seat bolster. All lights, gauges and controls function as designed, including the clock!

The head refresh, combined w/the Wilwood brake calipers & 5-speed gearbox result in an absolutely sublime driving experience. Power is available immediately and the throttle response is better than most from this era. The ride is smooth and vibration-free and the steering is tight and responsive. The short-throw 5-speed shifts crisply with first thru 4th gear ratios spaced perfectly for outstanding acceleration. The overdrive fifth allows for smooth and effortless cruising at highway speeds, turning just 2,000 RPMs at 70 MPH. The sale includes a rare, desirable hardtop along with a JDHT certificate.

While it would not be a successful JCNA Concours candidate, this E-type has been set up for drivers-combining tasteful, nearly imperceptible modifications that dramatically improve the driving experience. We're sure Sir William and everyone at Browns Lane would approve.
